Performance and Capacity Engineer Intern (PhD)

Facebook is seeking a Research Intern to join the Capacity Engineering & Analysis team to focus on site-wide performance and capacity projects. This person would be required to cross-functionally work with a number of teams to ensure optimal operation and growth of our computing resources from both a cost and technology perspective. This position is based at our Menlo Park office.
The Capacity Engineering and Analysis team (CEA) is an integral part of Infrastructure Foundation at Facebook. We collaborate with partner teams to help build highly performant and efficient infrastructure that powers the Facebook family of products including Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Marketplace, and many more. Owing to the ever growing scale of our data centers and the increasing variety of applications, we continuously invest to research, develop and evaluate new techniques to analyze applications at scale, develop tools and techniques for deep introspection of telemetry data, and align software requirements with hardware trends. As new AI/ML applications proliferate, Data volume reaches multi-exabytes and the number of servers pushes the boundary of what has ever been done before! We drive full stack (hardware, operating system, compiler, application) performance analysis and optimization of every piece of our infrastructure.
We have exciting research internship opportunities in the following specific areas:
  1. Hardware architecture of new devices, systems and performance analysis
  2. Application performance introspection at scale through telemetry and profiling
  3. ML hardware/software efficiency spanning serving, training and storage
PERFORMANCE AND CAPACITY ENGINEER INTERN (PHD) RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform research to help scale the largest web capacity in the world: Work with Product Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, and Data Engineering team to find the optimal way to scale the infrastructure. Tens of billions of user requests, hundreds of peta bytes of data, thousands of giga bps of network flow
  • Perform research and make recommendations aimed at tackling state-of-the-art hardware and software performance issues (e.g., optimize product/service performance, reduce resource consumption and shorten request latency, etc.)
  • Provide deepest visibility to what is going on for all products: Run capacity and performance experiments to determine scaling and utilization parameters for various service tiers
  • Find the game changers and bring them on: Work with financial analysts, operations and engineering to perform cutting-edge technologies investigation and cost analysis
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Currently in the process of obtaining, a(n) PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Operations Research or related field
  • Publications or experience in computer architecture, operating systems, data center technologies, performance analysis, workload characterization, or related field
  • Experience in utilizing theoretical and empirical research to solve problems
  • Ability to communicate complex research in a clear, precise, and actionable manner
  • Coding and scripting proficiency
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with databases or hadoop
  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op
