Emergency Management Internship - Denver International Airport

Denver International Airport is the 20th-busiest airport in the world and the 5th-busiest airport in the United States, serving 64.5 million passengers last year and generating more than $26 billion for the region annually. DEN is the largest and newest commercial airport in the United States and consists of 15 million square feet of built environment.

The Denver International Airport Emergency Management Team is looking to fill an Emergency Management Internship to assist in the organization and management of the resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies (preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery).

The Airport Emergency Management and Communications Department consists of the Emergency Management Operations, Preparedness and Communications Center groups.

  • The Emergency Management – Operations group; staffs the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) with a duty manager for 15 hours a day, conducts planning, and fulfills the role of Incident Commander (IC) or EOC Manager for airport incidents
  • The Emergency Management – Preparedness group; develops both classroom and computer-based training and conducts several Federal Emergency management Agency (FEMA) courses. This group also manages the multi-year training and exercise program and oversees continuity planning for the entire airport, collating each business unit plan into a single comprehensive continuity plan

This is an on-call position with an expected start date of June 1st, 2020 and an end date of August 7th, 2020.  This position is expected to work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits.

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to experience:
  • Assist with the design and conduct of emergency management preparedness exercises including an FAA regulatory full-scale aircraft accident exercise that will introduce the applicant to multi-agency response to a mass casualty event
  • Prepare exercise planning documents
  • Assist in the development of after-action reports and participate in the airport improvement planning process to ensure priority capabilities are addressed
  • Assist with airport Continuity of Operations (COOP) efforts that include a review of business unit quarterly updates to incorporate into the airport continuity plan
  • Exposure to the EOC and airport Communications Center and “ride along” opportunities with Terminal and Airside Operations
  • Assist with the development of instructional design, briefing and training materials in Word and PowerPoint or similar programs
  • Data entry in Word and Excel documents or similar programs
  • Assist with training and exercise logistics including management of volunteers, completion of registration packets, materials and participant feedback forms

Our ideal candidate will have/be:
  • Minimum of a sophomore standing or higher pursing a degree in Emergency Management, Emergency Services, Emergency and Disaster Management, Homeland Defense, Aviation Management, or a related field
  • Strong interest in emergency management
  • Knowledge of the Incident Command System
  • Self-motivated
  • Organized
  • High attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Basic computer skills (MS office suite)
  • FEMA IS 100, 200, 700 & 800 are strongly desired but not required

  • Education Requirement: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).

  • Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted
  • License/Certification Requirement: By position, may require a valid Driver's License at the time of application
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
