Sustainability and Environmental Services Internship - Denver International Airport

Denver International Airport’s Sustainability Division is looking to fill two Summer 2020 student workers – one within Sustainability and the other on the Environmental Services team. The selected candidates will assist with projects related to reporting, policy, analysis and help foster environmental stewardship at all levels within the organization.

This is an on-call position with an expected start date of June 1, 2019 and an end date of August 7, 2019.  This position is expected to work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits.

While the ideal candidate qualifications are similar for these internships, the positions are distinct from each other.

As a Sustainability intern, you will have the opportunity to experience:
  • Review and analyze data related to DEN’s Sustainability Policy and Core Values
  • Work with divisions throughout the organization to help set baselines and develop and implement strategic plans to enable them to meet shot and long-term sustainability goals
  • Research, develop, and update educational and employee engagement materials related to sustainability and energy management
  • Develop and update website content on sustainability and energy management
  • Assist with the collection and analysis of data of DEN’s greenhouse gas inventory and sustainability reporting

The Environmental Services intern will focus on the following:
  • Support with data tracking and analysis of DEN’s Environmental programs, which incorporate environmental planning, storm water management, air quality and waste diversion
  • Calculating emissions savings as they relate to existing grant programs
  • Outreach and marketing to internal airport stakeholders (i.e. concessionaires) to promote composting and food donation efforts.
  • Assist in research and analysis  of waste diversion best practices in place at U.S. and international airports

Our ideal candidate will have/be:
  • Minimum of a sophomore standing or higher pursing a degree in Environmental Science; Sustainability Management; Physical, Biological, or Engineering Sciences, or a related field specific to the departmental and/or work assignment.
  • Strong interest in sustainability, corporate responsibility, environmental policy, and/or Green Building
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Basic knowledge of environmental health regulations and sustainability to include:
  • Air quality
  • Greenhouse gas emission inventories
  • Waste diversion practices
  • Energy and water conservation
  • Other sustainability strategies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Friendly positive attitude, self-motivation, organization, and the ability to work as a member of a team and as individual
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office with a focus on Excel

  • Education Requirement: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).

  • Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted
  • License/Certification Requirement: By position, may require a valid Driver's License at the time of application
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
